"Mother"

Dear Friends,

I'm honored to share another new song with you today. It's called "Mother" and I wrote it for my mom. When my family and I found out that she was sick a couple months back, I began writing this song. In favor of spending her last days with her, I wasn't able to finish it or share it with her. I'm so grateful for that precious time I got with her, but it breaks my heart that I wasn't able to sing this song to her before now. After she passed, I found myself returning to this song- it felt a little like visiting a friend and a little like healing. Before I knew it, this song kind of spilled out and was finished. That rarely happens for me, so I decided to record it right away and put this song into the world for Mother's Day, in her honor. So, here's "Mother," in memory of the radiant force of love that is my mom. I'm so grateful to share this song, and a little bit of who she was, with you.

The artwork for "Mother" was made by one of my mom's and my favorite artists in the universe, Joey Chou. Joey was sweet enough to not only paint this cover for the song in her honor (using her favorite colors, as well as imagery from her favorite place, Hawai'i), but also, when he learned that my mom was sick and spending her birthday in a hospital, he made her a custom birthday art piece. It made my mom so happy and brought many beautiful tears. I am forever grateful for these gifts that Joey has given to my mom, myself and my family. Learn more about Joey and his gorgeous work here!

Lastly, a massive thank you to Chris Bethea who mixed and mastered "Mother"!

Lyrics:

MOTHER

love, bigger than the ocean
is what you’ve given to me.
you hunted down every danger
so my brother and i could swim free
in a love bigger than the ocean.
🌊
the shores, they were mighty scary.
but at my back, i had the mighty sea.
there's something so strange about human nature,
we get so used to the gifts that we receive.
now, i'm more than grateful
for a love bigger than the ocean.
🌊🌊
i dreamt you were down by the water.
you looked so proud and happy to see me.
you were laying down some kind of red carpet on the beach.
i said, mom, i'm not sure what this means.
it was an invitation
to a love bigger than the ocean.
🌊🌊🌊
now, we've got children of our own.
we dive back into the waters we have known.
as you loved us, we'll love them to the brim.
because of you, they already know how to swim
in a love bigger than,
a love deeper than the ocean.
🌊🌊🌊🌊
i still have so much i want to tell you.
i still have so much to figure out.
there’s so much of you in every reflection of my life-
i hope you know, i couldn't be more proud.
of this life swimming in
a love deeper than the ocean.
